What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of sleeping? Your bed? The clothes you wear or the covers? Not many pay attention to the pillow they use. The pillow under your head is as important as the bed you sleep on.

Here are a few reasons why it is so important:

  • When you lay down on your bed, the head is rested in the pillow all through the night. A good support is important because your neck will suffer otherwise. When there is not enough support for the head, the neck takes the strain and the result is bad aches
  • The head has to be elevated at least slightly, so that you can breathe properly throughout the night. If the pillow were to sink in fully, you may not have enough room to breathe in as the pillow will engulf your face.
  • A hard pillow may be too firm for your head and can leave you with a neck pain so bad that you may not only be able to sleep well, but may even suffer from pain after waking up in the morning.
  • It is not just the head and neck that gets supported by a pillow but your upper back is supported as well. As the spine has a natural curve, the pillow helps in maintaining this natural alignment.

The level of comfort a pillow can offer varies from person to person. What may be comfortable for you need not necessarily be comfortable for your partner. Hence instead of buying similar pillows, just to match, buy a pillow that will suit you and give you a good night’s sleep without you having to suffer any back pain or a stiff neck.

The position you sleep in also influences the pillow you choose. Some may sleep on their side while some like to sleep on their stomachs. The pillow will vary for each of these positions.
